Once, Arjuna turned to Lord Krishna and asked, “O Lord, please tell me about the Ekadashi that falls in the bright fortnight of Shravana month. What is it called, how should it be observed, which god do we worship, and what reward does it bring?”
Krishna smiled and said, “Just hearing this story brings as much merit as performing a great sacrifice. Let me tell you about a king who lived long ago.”
O Partha! At the start of the Dvapara Yuga, there was a city called Mahishmati, ruled by a king named Mahajita. The king had no children, and this left him sad all the time. Despite ruling a grand kingdom, his life felt empty without a son. He tried everything he could, but nothing worked, and as the years passed, his worry only grew deeper.
One day, in his royal court, the king said, “I have never wronged anyone. I have never taken money unfairly from my people, nor caused them pain. I have cared for my subjects like my own children and treated everyone fairly. Still, I cannot understand why I am suffering so much. Please find out the reason for me.”

The Meeting With Maharshi Lomasha
So the ministers travelled into the forest, where they came across several wise sages. Among them was the respected Maharishi Lomasha. They bowed to him, sat down, and said, “O revered sage, our king is righteous and loved by his people, yet he has no child. Please tell us why, and how this can be fixed.”
Lomasha Rishi closed his eyes and looked into the king’s past life. After a while, he opened his eyes and said, “In his previous birth, this king was proud, and he committed one serious mistake. He used to wander from place to place.
Once, on the Ekadashi of Jyeshtha month, he had gone without food for two days. At noon, he stopped at a pond to drink water. There he found a cow, which had just given birth, also drinking from the same pond. The king pushed the thirsty cow away and drank the water himself.
This one act is the cause of his suffering today. The merit he earned from fasting on Ekadashi in his past life gave him the throne, but pushing away that thirsty cow cost him the joy of having a child.”
Hearing this, the ministers asked, “O sage, is there any way to wash away this sin and bring our king a son?”
When Sage Told The Importance Of Doing Putrada Ekadashi Fast
Lomasha Rishi replied, “If all of you observe the Putrada Ekadashi fast in the bright fortnight of Shravana, stay awake through the night, and offer the merit of your fast to the king, he will surely be blessed with a son, and his sorrow will end.”
Overjoyed, the ministers thanked the sage, took his blessing, and returned home. There, they kept the Putrada Ekadashi fast and dedicated its merit to the king on Dwadashi.
Because of this good deed, the queen soon conceived, and after nine months, she gave birth to a bright and healthy son.
Krishna then said to Arjuna, “O son of Pandu! This is why this Ekadashi is called Putrada Ekadashi, meaning ‘the one that grants a child.’ Anyone wishing for a child should observe this fast in the bright fortnight of Shravana with proper devotion. It brings happiness in this life and good fortune in the next.”
Summary (Katha Saar)
The story of Mahajita teaches us – when people commit wrong acts, they often don’t realise the consequences that follow. Even a small mistake, the scriptures tell us, can bring great suffering. So one should always stay away from wrongdoing, since its weight can carry across lifetimes. Every person should walk the path of truth, hold complete faith in God, and always remember that hurting someone’s feelings is the greatest sin of all.
