What is Guru Pradosh Vrat?
Guru Pradosh Vrat 2026 is a special Pradosh Vrat dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Pradosh Vrat is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi of every Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. When Trayodashi falls on a Thursday, it is called Guru Pradosh Vrat.

Guru Pradosh Vrat Katha
The Guru Pradosh Vrat Katha tells the story of a poor Brahmin woman and a young prince named Dharmagupta. According to the traditional story, a Brahmin woman became a widow and had no regular source of income. She survived by asking people for food along with her young son.
One day, while returning home, she found an injured young man. Feeling sorry for him, she brought him home and cared for him. The young man was actually Prince Dharmagupta of Vidarbha. His kingdom had been attacked by enemies, his father had been imprisoned and he had lost everything. He was forced to live away from his home and family.
The Brahmin woman was a devotee of Lord Shiva and regularly observed Pradosh Vrat. Prince Dharmagupta also learned about the Vrat and began worshipping Lord Shiva. After some time, Dharmagupta met a Gandharva girl named Anshumati. She developed feelings for him and introduced him to her parents.
According to the traditional story, Lord Shiva appeared in the dream of Anshumati’s parents and guided them to arrange her marriage with Dharmagupta. Anshumati and Dharmagupta were then married. Her father also helped Dharmagupta with his army. With this support, Dharmagupta defeated his enemies and regained his kingdom.
Why is Guru Pradosh Vrat Significant?
Thursday is associated with Dev Guru Brihaspati, who is traditionally linked with knowledge, teachers, elders, marriage, children and dharma. Guru Pradosh is therefore seen as a day when the blessings of Lord Shiva and the influence of Guru come together.
This Vrat is also traditionally connected with Pitru Kripa, the blessings of ancestors, because Brihaspati is associated with family lineage and dharma. Many families observe it before or during the Pitru Paksha period for this reason.
Every Pradosh Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva. What changes with the weekday is the specific blessing that tradition connects with that particular Pradosh.
What is the Guru Pradosh Vrat Puja Vidhi?
Devotees can follow these simple steps for Guru Pradosh Vrat Puja Vidhi:
1. Take a bath and take the Vrat Sankalp
Begin the day with a bath and wear clean clothes. You may take a simple Sankalp to observe the fast and worship Lord Shiva with devotion. Some traditions associate yellow with Thursday, so devotees may choose to wear yellow clothes.
2. Observe the fast
Fasting rules can differ between families and traditions. Some devotees observe a complete fast, while others have fruits, milk and other fasting foods.
A strict waterless fast is not necessary for everyone. People who are unwell, elderly, pregnant or taking regular medicines should follow a suitable routine rather than forcing themselves to fast.
3. Prepare for the evening Puja
Take a bath before the evening Puja and clean the place where you will worship. Place an image or Shivling of Lord Shiva along with Goddess Parvati. Light a Diya and incense.
4. Perform Shivling Abhishek
Offer water to the Shivling. Devotees may also perform Abhishek with milk or Panchamrit according to their family tradition. After Abhishek, offer Bel Patra, flowers, sandalwood, fruits and other suitable Puja items.
5. Worship Shiva and Parvati
Pray to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati together. You may also offer Bhog according to your tradition.
6. Chant Shiva Mantras
Chant Om Namah Shivaya and other Shiva Mantras during the Puja. You can also read the Guru Pradosh Vrat Katha and Shiv Chalisa and aarti.
7. Donate according to your ability
Donation is also considered meaningful on this day. You may donate food, fruits, pulses, clothes or other useful items to someone in need. Yellow-coloured food items are traditionally associated with Thursday worship.
8. Break the fast
Break the fast after the Pradosh Kaal Puja is complete, usually the same night. Some families break it the next morning after the Trayodashi Tithi ends. Both practices are followed, so devotees may follow what their family has always done. Simple sattvik food is preferred for Parana
